Guidance
Parents of Freshmen:
On Thursday, May 12th, the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) will be given at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. ERB’s mission as an international educational testing organization is to provide objective assessment data enabling member schools to identify instructional needs for students. Founded in 1927 at Columbia University, ERB is an independent, not-for-profit membership organization annually testing more than a quarter of a million students in academically-oriented independent and suburban schools in the United States and abroad.
The primary purpose of assessment is to gather information to serve as a foundation for instructional review and improvement. ERB testing programs, with simplified and easy-to-use report forms, help determine what has been learned and what has not been learned, offer clues as to what can be done to provide support for individual students, and to strengthen programs. It will also indicate how local performance compares with that in other academically-oriented schools around the country.
New users of the battery continue to be impressed with its strength in differentiating among students, particularly those in the upper quartile and achievement who tend to score high on less demanding tests.
The nuts and bolts of the test are the following:
1. Have your daughter bring two No. 2 pencils to the test.
2. Calculators are permitted for one section of the test, (Mathematics, Part 2).
3. Have your student bring snacks (e.g. crackers, fruit, candy bars, etc.). Students may not go to the cafeteria candy machines during testing breaks.
4. Although this is a testing day it runs as a regular school day (testing begins immediately at 8:15 and runs until 2:45). We have built in a 40 minute period for lunch. Food may be purchased in the school cafeteria or brought from home at lunch time.
We will continue to update you on the results of this testing.

April 2011
Dear Freshmen and Junior Parents and Students,
Freshmen and Junior students will be taking the ERB WRAP (The Writing Assessment Program) test in May. This is a two-hour writing sample test. This test is “a direct measure of writing that lends itself to incorporation into writing portfolios.” The test format is very similar to the PSSA writing sample taken by students in public schools. We discontinued the PSSA test in favor of the WRAP because the results of the WRAP would reflect and compare our school population to other private schools. You may also be aware that the SAT now includes a writing sample (as of 2005) and this WRAP test will help the students prepare for this test.
The WRAP will be marked according to a rubric determined by ERB, which is posted on the Mount’s website under Academic Departments. A sample test will be given to the students at the beginning of May. It is very similar to the scoring rubric for the SAT’s. Results from the WRAP test should help a student identify her particular areas of weaknesses and strengths in writing.
The WRAP tests for ninth and eleventh graders will be given Monday, May 2 and will consist of a planning and first draft writing period, followed by a break, and then the final draft writing period. Fortunately, there are nine days between the WRAP and the AP English Language exam this year. The ERB test for ninth grade will be given Thursday, May 12.
If you have any additional questions please call me at 215-233-3177 x305 or your daughter’s guidance counselor.
Sincerely,
Ms. Eileen Wilkinson

April 2011
To Parents of Seniors,
As we’ve been advertising since January, in order to include news in our graduation book about admissions to a school, an honors program or a scholarship, the guidance office must have copies of official notification of letters from colleges that your daughter receives. We generally do not receive word of scholarships and invitations to honor programs from the colleges. We publish all scholarships, but do not publish grants. We also list the school your daughter will attend. Schools that our students were accepted to, but will not attend, will be published in a group list. It is very important to us that everyone’s scholastic merit is properly acknowledged.
Finally, we also want to tell you what a joy it has been working with your daughters this year. We have found them to be extremely (usually) conscientious with adherence to deadlines. This is the single factor that we most appreciate. We applaud the class of ’11 and we thank them for all they have done to make our jobs more pleasant!
With best wishes,
Sandra K. Moore AnnMarie Dougherty
Director of Guidance College Counselor
April 2011
To Parents and Students of the Class of 2012:
The purple College Planning Guide will be given out on Thursday, April 7th in conjunction with Steve Meritt’s college planning talk. If you are unable to attend this event, the Guide will be mailed. Also is a request for help with writing our daughter’s letter of recommendation. (See next page.)
In early September we will mail the College Planning Guide, Part II. This contains details of a very specific nature, including deadlines.
The myriad of details and uncertainties surrounding college admission may seem daunting, though experience indicates that they can be kept in perspective if they are approached in an incremental and routine fashion. The time devoted to thinking about priorities and considering options is both a logical culmination of the high school years and a necessary preparation for the independence of college. Thus, ongoing discussion both within your family and between you and the Mount will be natural and productive. The more ideas we share, the more useful all of us at the Mount can be as counselors.
One last item, the new Personal and College Profile on the back of the score report on SATs compares information you provided about your academic record and college plans on the Student Descriptive Questionnaire (SDQ) to information from up to four colleges to which you asked to have your scores sent. The entire new Student Score Report is filled with significant information. Spend some time reviewing it.
Sincerely,
Sandra K. Moore AnnMarie Dougherty
Director of Guidance College Counselor
SAT Dates:
Please see the Guidance page on the Mount website orghttp://www.msjacad.org for the dates and times of the SATs.
April 2011
To Parents of the Class of 2012:
We need your help in writing your daughter’s letter of recommendation to colleges by responding to the following:
Is there anything you can tell us about your daughter that might help us to know her better? We particularly welcome any comments you can make about her strengths, weaknesses, needs or developmental history that you feel are important. An example of a question you might want to address is ...
Describe an anecdote from the last three years which reveals an aspect of your daughter’s character. Keep in mind that we may want to refer to this anecdote or even quote you in our letter of recommendation. Feel free to attach as many pages as necessary.
We thank you in advance for your time. Your cooperation allows us to gather a complete picture of your daughter. In the past we have gathered valuable information about our students through this vehicle. We would appreciate your mailing this in the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
The more writing we can do over the summer, the less hectic our Fall is. (And the more we can work with your daughter directly instead of putting so much time into the process.) It is to this end that we are requesting your insights before the end of this school year.
Sincerely,
Sandra K. Moore

Guidance
FYI – Junior Students and Parents
Undoubtedly your thoughts and those of your daughter are turning towards the sometimes overwhelming task of selecting a college and all the details involved in that process - taking the appropriate tests, filling out financial aid forms and determining the appropriate match among them. But have you and your college-bound junior discussed the type of environment that will best impact her success in college and beyond?
As a part of our efforts to prepare our juniors for the college search, we are offering a presentation to our students entitled, “Making Your College Search Count.” This is a practical, current look at college selection and the application process. It will be presented here at Mount Saint Joseph Academy on March 23rd from 8:30 AM until 9:30 AM in the Auditorium.
Making Your College Search Count offers valuable perspective to students on how to:
- Manage materials sent to them by colleges
- Focus their search based on their interests and needs
- Gather information on campus visits
- Understand how schools select students
- Utilize different types of financial aid to assist them in financing their education
- Create a personal college search that will lead them to the college that is the best match for them and where they will be most successful
The program shows students that they are in control of their college search -- and stresses that selecting a college is a personal process. It shares fundamentals of applying to colleges and financing your education -- things many students wish that they had understood much earlier in the process.
There is no fee to attend the presentation thanks to corporate sponsors such as: Monster and FastWeb, NRCCUA and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
AN INVITATION
Join us on Tuesday, March 15th, at 7:15 PM for an interesting and informative presentation on The College Process. Steve Merritt, Dean of Enrollment Management from Villanova University, will be our guest speaker. It will be held in the Mount’s auditorium.
SAT INFO
Many of our upperclasswomen have recently received their standardized test results (SAT’s). There are two free online resources that the College Board provides that can help them make the most of their test experience:
SAT Skills Insight helps students familiarize themselves with and practice for the SAT. At www.sat.collegeboard.com/practice, students can access this online tool to see the types of skills demonstrated within a particular score band and also gather suggestions for improvement.
My SAT Online Score Report includes information about percentiles, a copy of the student’s essay and details about her performance on different types of questions. With the report comes a wealth of online tools to help each student find the right fit for college. Go to www.collegeboard.com/scorereport-demo to view a demonstration of the report.

Despite the frigid temperatures, the ever-popular Quizzo night returned to the Mount on Friday, January 21st, and brought together over 300 parents, alumnae and friends. Costumes ranged from alumnae dressed as Mounties to Happy Hallidays (in celebration of the Phillies). Our sincere thanks, once again, to our veteran emcees Dave Cavanaugh (father of Courtney ’05 and Mackenzie ’07) and Kent Roman (Board member and father of Kerry ’06, Corin ’09 and Lisa ’13) who developed challenging questions and provided an enjoyable program.
Stephanie Rivero ’11 provided the musical talent for the evening and over 50 students volunteered their time to ensure a fun and successful event. We are grateful to past parent Sue Maron (mother of Kerrie ’09) for her assistance and generous donation of gift bags for the winners. Over $6,000 was raised and the proceeds were split between the 20/20 and Robotics programs.

ATTN: SENIOR PARENTS
SENIOR RECOGNITION
The end of senior year is an exciting time for students as they receive news of college acceptances, admissions to college honors programs and scholarships. Their “good news” is important to everyone at the Mount, and deserves to be properly acknowledged.
As is our practice, the Mount publishes information about the school your daughter will attend along with any honors programs and scholarships she has received. In addition, students are formally recognized during Senior Recognition Night, June 1, 2011.
In order to include news about admissions to a school, an honors program or a scholarship the Guidance Office must have the following information:
• Copies of ALL official notification of acceptance letters from the college.
• Copies of ALL official notification of scholarships* or honors programs.
Please remind your daughter to bring the notification of all results to her guidance counselor so that they can be copied and kept on file.
Additionally, we will need ALL letters the student receives (accepted, deferred, rejected) to keep our Naviance statistics accurate. This computer program never uses names.
*Grants and other forms of financial aid are not considered scholarships. However, scholarships that are included in a financial aid package are recognized.
If you have any questions feel free to call Ms. Dougherty or Mrs. Moore.
Please understand, nothing can be published without an official letter.
Financial Aid Consultants and Scholarship Searches
Attn: Junior Parents
If you have not already been approached by a “financial aid consultant,” consider this valuable information.
These “financial aid consultants” generally operate in the following way:
For fees ranging from $200 to $1,000 or more, they promise to complete applications, walk you through the process, essentially acting as your agent in contacting the college/university to get your daughter the best financial aid package.
If more money is needed, these consultants frequently send letters to colleges and universities which are clearly taken from a prepared text. All the consultants need to do is to fill in the blanks with the candidate’s name and the institution they are addressing.
This is NOT the best way to have your special circumstances/needs presented to the financial aid officer. Additionally, parents usually don’t need the help of these consultants since high school counselors have the same materials available to families.
At the Mount, two books have been written on the college process. One will be given to your daughter in March of her junior year and the second one will be given at the beginning of her senior year. They contain comprehensive information about the college process. Additionally, Ms. Dougherty and Mrs. Moore will meet with senior parents in September to explain how the Mount participates in your daughter’s preparation for college.
If a parent needs specific information about filling out any institutional forms, the best alternative is to call the financial aid office at the school of interest. They pride themselves on showing the qualified candidate that she can afford to come to their institution.
At most colleges or universities, the admissions office works in tandem with the financial aid assistance office. The admissions people find the qualified students. Then, the financial aid people attempt to provide the financial assistance that is needed. These people work diligently at getting students through the administrative process with the least amount of trouble. Financial aid offices are most helpful with students and parents. As our various financial aid speakers have repeatedly stated, “Call us with your questions. Don’t pay someone to answer questions that we would gladly answer.”
Another unsolicited service to be wary of is “scholarship searches.”
If you believe the brochures, scholarship services can help you find “billions of dollars in unclaimed scholarships that go unawarded each year.” Most scholarship services charge anywhere from $40 to hundreds of dollars. What they give you in return is the same information a student or family can get from their high school, in the library or from the Internet. Mail scholarship listings received at the Mount can be found on the Mount’s website. The information you seek is available and it is free. The Web information on scholarships is quite accessible.

If you decide that your daughter is to order a school ring, a $50.00 deposit is requested on ring order day. If paying by check, please make the check payable to Jostens. The balance must be received no later than March 11, 2011. No other ring but the Mount 2011 school ring from Jostens will be presented at the ring ceremony. However, students may submit either a Mount ring from an alumna or a family heirloom ring. All the girls will receive these rings in the same style box. We encourage all members of the class of 2012 to attend this beautiful Eucharistic Liturgy.

January 2011
Dear Parents and Students:
All students who want to apply for the Federal Financial Aid Programs (FAFSA Information) must file the 2011-2012 FAFSA. The FAFSA collects information that the federal processor will use to calculate the student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which in turn is used to determine the student’s eligibility for the following Student Financial Assistance Programs: Federal Direct Student Loans, Federal Family Education Loans, Federal Pell Grants, Federal Work-Study, Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grants, and Federal Perkins Loans.
The Department of Education has added the website address to the FAFSA so that students and parents can more readily access the list of school codes (these are the codes that a student enters in the last section of the FAFSA to indicate which schools should receive the data from the application).
Hopefully you will find the following financial aid and scholarship information to be helpful. Some of these tips are directed towards parents and some are directed towards students.
Read all materials about financial aid sent from the colleges. Pay particular attention to deadlines and which forms are required. All colleges require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Approximately 10% also require the CSS PROFILE, and some have their own form.
Call each specific college your daughter has applied to if you have questions regarding financial aid. Financial aid varies greatly from college to college.
Do a computer “scholarship search.” There are many web sites to try. An excellent site for private scholarships is http://www.fastweb.com. This is a database of more than 275,000 scholarships, grants, fellowships, and loans representing billions of dollars in private sector funding for college students living in the United States.
Do a library “scholarship search” (should take you an hour or two). There are many books available in your public library, the Mount’s guidance office, and a local college library that tell about private scholarships.
Do a bookstore “scholarship search.” Spend time in one of the large bookstores searching through stacks of
scholarship and financial aid books.
Investigate scholarships available through your church or synagogue and from local service clubs of which you are members (e.g. Knights of Columbus, Rotary, Lions, Elks, etc.).
Pay for a private scholarship search firm only if you’ve
thoroughly investigated the firm, have spoken with
previous satisfied clients, and have exhausted all other
possibilities. Frankly, there is nothing a scholarship search firm can find that you can’t find on your computer.
Decide which scholarships to apply for. Apply only for those for which there is a reasonable chance of success. Write the best essay you can, but don’t fall into the trap of overworking it so much that you lose your authentic voice in the process. They want to know about you. And try to use the same essay, or a variation of the same essay, for more than one scholarship.
Make a master financial aid calendar. Include each
college’s deadline, which application(s) they require,
private scholarship name, application deadline, and a list of any other requirements.
Plan a time when you and your daughter can spend several hours filling out the financial aid applications. You should have a draft or complete version of your federal income tax return for the year immediately preceding enrollment (2010 for the 2011-2012 academic year), or, at the very least, a summary of income and assets.
Carefully following instructions, fill out all financial aid
applications. Make sure answers are complete, accurate, and legible.
Mail your completed FAFSA (and other pertinent forms) as soon as possible after January 1st (but not before) in the envelope inserted in the application booklet. Send by regular mail and be certain you make a photocopy before you send it.
When you receive your official Student Aid Report (SAR), review it and any other acknowledgement you receive.
Respond promptly to any request for additional
information.
Compare the awards received from each college.
Send your SAR to the college you will attend. Be sure to notify the college of any private scholarships you are awarded.
If you have questions about any of the above, feel free to call the Guidance Department at the Mount.
Sincerely,
Sandra K. Moore
